Whatever your skin type, be it normal, dry or  oily, you need a regular routine to help give your complexion a fresh, healthy glow. Follow a daily programme of proper cleansing, toning and moisturising, and treat your skin to  weekly or monthly facials. Don’t forget to also maintain a good healthy balanced diet, and drink at least 8 glasses of water daily, also try to cut down on caffeine and alcohol.

 

 

Herbs & Essential Oils for Specific Skin Types

A facial steam provides a thorough and deep cleansing and is easy and inexpensive. The heat causes you to perspire which aids the elimination of toxins as wel as stimulating circulation. Steam is a good skin softener, and also opens pores, helping the skin to absorb the beneficial properties of the herbs.

 

How often should you steam your face?

  • Normal Skin: Once per week
  • Oily Skin: 2-3 times per week
  • Dry Skin: Once every 2 weeks.

Do NOT have a facial steam if you have thread veins, serious skin disorders, asthma, other breathing difficulties or heart problems.

Preparing a facial steam (sauna) is very simple. Tie your hair back, remove make up and clean your face the normal way. Take 2 handfuls of fresh herbs, or 3 tbsp (45 ml) of dried herbs, place the herbs in a bowl and pour over 3 pints (1 ½ litres) of boiling water, stir briefly with a wooden spoon or chop stick. Hold your face 12 inches (30 cm) away – or 18 inches (45 cm) if you have sensitive skin, and make a tent over your head and the bowl with a towel. Keep your eyes closed and maintain this position for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with tepid water for a few minutes and then splash with cold water or witch hazel.

A diluted herbal vinegar or infusion of elderflower, peppermint, sage or yarrow dabbed on with cotton wool will tighten your pores. Avoid strong changes in temperature, and don’t go out for at least an hour.

Don’t throw your herbs from the steam into the bin, instead bury them in the garden. This is a compost, but also it is returning the herbs back to where they came from! It is a lovely gesture of give and take within Universal law.

Face Packs & Masks for Normal Skin Type:


  • 2 tsp plain whole-milk yogurt
  • ½ tsp cosmetic clay
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop geranium essential oil

Combine all the ingredients together, mixing well into a paste. Smooth onto clean skin avoiding the eye area. Relax for 15 minuets then rinse with warm water.

 

 

Honey & Lavender Face Mask for Normal Skin Type:

  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • 3 drops lavender essential oil

Mix together well, dampen your face and neck with warm water and smooth on the honey and lavender mixture. Relax for 15 minuets then rinse off with warm water.

Face packs & Masks for Dry Skin types:

  • Avacado Mask
  • ½ ripe avacado
  • 1 tsp plain whole-milk yogurt

Mash the avacado and combine with the yogurt, mix thoroughly and apply to clean skin. Relax for 15 minuets before rinsing off with warm water.

Aromatherapy Mask for Dry Skin Types:

  • 2 tsp plain whole-milk yogurt
  • ½ tsp jojoba oil
  • ½ tsp cosmetic clay
  • 2 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 1 drop rose essential oil

Mix all the ingredients together and apply apply to clean skin. After 15 minuets of relaxing, rinse off with warm water.

Face Packs & Masks for Oily Skin Type:


  • 1 tsp plain whole-milk yogurt
  • 1 tsp finely chopped cucumber pulp
  • 2 tsp cosmetic clay
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop juniper essential oil

Mix all the ingredients together thoroughly. Smooth on the mask and relax for 15 minuets then rinse with warm water.

Apple & Cinnamon Mask

This is an anti-septic mask!

  • 1 ripe apple, peeled and grated
  • ½ tsp single cream
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tbsp ground oats
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mash it into a paste. Apply and relax for 1o inuets then rinse off with warm water!

Cosmetic Clays

Fullers earth is a clay which is very absorbing and excellent for drawing out inpurities frm the skin. You can use it instead of talcum powder!

 

 

 

Kaolin is a white powdery clay, also known as China clay. This also hase excellent absorbing qualities and is used in face powder and clay masks.

 

 

Herbs for Face Packs

  • For Normal Skin Types: Fennel, juniper berries, lady’s mantle, lime flowers, mint, nettle
  • For Dry Skin Types: Comfrey, houseleek, marsh mallow, pounded flax seed (which contain a softening mucilage)
  • For Oily Skin Types: sage, yarrow: 2 tbsp (30 ml) of pounded fennel seed to exfoliate dead skin and refine pores.

Non Herbal Ingredients for Face packs

Milk products have softening and mild bleaching properties. Substitute 1 tbsp (15 ml) of the herbal infusion for 1 tbsp (15 ml) of creamy milk, or sour cream for dry skin, or yogurt or buttermilk for oily skin.

 

Add 1 tsp (5ml) honey for its healing properties

A few drops of lemon juice or cider viegar help to restore the skin’s acid mantle.

Eggs are an excellent binding agent. Add an egg yolk for dry skin and a beaten egg white for oily skin.

Mashed cucumber, strawberries, tomatoes, lemon juice and grapefruit juice are all good astringents. Avacado and ripe peach are moisturisers.

This is just a few, there is an endless list of yummies to add for face packs.. bananas, apples, almonds to name only a few more!


Cleansers

Cleansing a big part of creating and maintaining  healthy skin, and should be part of your daily routine, once of twice per day. Most commercial soaps are generally too harsh for facial skin, stripping away natural oils and causing dryness. A good cleaner should be gentle yet effective in removing dirt, excess sebum and the grime of pollution from our environment. Wearing make-up can clog up pores and prevent your skin from breathing, cleansing away all your make-up before going to bed should be an important part of your nightly routine.

Strawberry Smoothie Cleanser

This is good enough to eat!

  • 1 fresh strawberry
  • 1 tbsp plain whole-milk yogurt
  • 1 drop of lavender essential oil

Mash up the strawberry and mix the juice well into the yogurt, then add the lavender essential oil and mix again well combining all the ingredients.  Dampen your face with a little warm water then massage the mixture into your skin well. Rinse with warm water.

Herbal Cleansing Milk

  • 125ml (4fl oz) plain low fat yogurt
  • 125ml (4fl oz) water
  • 2 tbsp dried lavender
  • 1 tbsp dried peppermint

Mix all the ingredients together in pint sized glass jar and steep overnight in the refrigerator. Strain and rebottle. Dampen your skin with a little warm water, then gently wipe the milk cleanser onto your face using a cotton wool ball. Repeat until your skin is clean, then rinse with warm water, apply toner and moisturiser. This mixture will keep for about 1 week if kept in the refrigerator.

Rose & Glycerine Cleanser

This is very good for dry and sensitive skin types.

125ml rose water

125ml vegetable glycerine

2 drops rose essential oil

Add all the ingredients to a bottle,  and give it a good shake. Dampen your skin with a little warm water then gently massage the lotion in with your fingertips. Rinse with warm water.

Neroli Cleansing Cream

An excellent cleanser for mature skin.

  • 2 tbsp jojoba oil
  • 1 tbsp almond oil
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbasp grated beeswax
  • 1 400-IU capule vitamin E oil
  • 4 tbsp rose water
  • 3 drops neroli essential oil
  • 3 drops palmarosa essential oil
  • 3 drops grapefruit seed extract

Warm the jojoba, almond and coconut oils with bees wax over a low heat until all the wax has melted. Remove from heat and add the vitamin E capsule. Warm the rose water over a low heat until luke warm, then gently pour the liquid into the wax and oil mixture (also luke warm) as you are pouring beat it steadily with a wire whisk or an electric blender set on the lowest setting. Do this until the mixture is cool, then add the essential oils and grapefruit seed extract stirring in gently. Spoon into a clean jar and leave to cool before adding the lid. Apply the cream sparingly to your skin then wipe off with damp cotton wool, rinse your face with warm water then tone. and moisturise. Keep this cream in a cool place.

Grapefruit & Lemon Cleanser

  • 60ml (2fl oz) distilledwitch hazel
  • 60ml (2fl oz) vegetable glycerine
  • 60ml (2fl oz) aloe vera gel
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 5 drops grapefruit essential oil
  • 2drops lemon essential oil

Mix the ingredients in a bottle shaking well to combine. Dampen your skin with warm water and gently massage in the cleanser. Rinsewith warm water.

Indian Face Balm

  • 1 tbsp peach kernal oil
  • 1 tbsp wheatgerm oil
  • 3 drops jasmine essential oil
  • 1 drop basil essential oil

Blend all the ingredients together and massage into skin. Avoid during pregnancy & if you have sensitive skin a patch test is advised for the basil essential oil.
